About: The FANHS conference forms a national home for students, scholars, community leaders, artists, and healers. The space opens pathways for shared research, storytelling, and cultural memory. Emerging scholars and students enter this home with new questions, new narratives, and new visions for Filipino American history.
PiNoise merges “Pinoy” and “noise” and is pronounced “pea-noise.” It was originally used in 1998 as the name of an annual Filipino pop music festival in San Francisco. We are using it now to say that we are gathering to make noise. And Filipino traditions have many examples of what that sounds like–not only in music, but in laughter, story-telling, and ritual. We are making noise as Filipino Americans and FANHS, here–in the nation’s capital for the first time–and now, recognizing the moment we are in as a nation.
Monuments to Change is a nod to the landscape around us. But it also recognizes how Filipino Americans have remade American history. Monuments literally cement dominant narratives in place, narratives that extol American heroism at the expense of Filipinos. But through scholarship, organizing and community action, we have successfully changed monuments and added new layers of meaning. Each effort opens space for fuller histories and deeper understanding

Panel: Filipino Folklore Remix: A Workshop for Young Writers
Join us on Saturday, October 3, from 1:00-4:30 pm, for our FAHM – Filipino American History Month – kidlit celebration! Eight Filipino American authors will be doing readings and signings of their most recent picture books and middle grade novels.
Each family will receive a special passport at the event. For every reading that a family attends, they’ll receive a stamp on their passport from the author at the end of their reading. After a family receives four stamps on their passport, they’ll get a prize!

The Philippine Medical Association of San Diego (PMASD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization of Filipino American Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers committed to uplifting and enriching the Filipino community by recognizing and responding to its needs, both locally in San Diego and abroad in the Philippines.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in all people, here in San Diego as well as globally. In the United States, the Filipino Community suffers from heart disease at a rate twice that of the general American population. San Diego County has the third highest population of Filipino Americans, with over 200,000. The PMASD Carabao 5K promotes a lifestyle that encourages stronger hearts to defend against this horrible, largely preventable disease.

This is an In-Store Event with authors Shannon Lee and Fonda Lee discussing MARK OF THE WARRIOR with Tracy Badua. The event will consist of a 30 minute presentation, followed by a Q&A with the audience, and finally a signing line.
Tracy breaks down why we root for characters we find unrelatable or unlikeable and how writers get, and keep, their readers invested. Tracy can lead attendees in character development exercises including critical analysis of published text or other media and attendee reflections on their own writing. This program will not be recorded.
Tracy explores how folklore-inspired storytelling can connect with today’s young readers, spark creativity, and reflect the wide world we live in today. Examples will be drawn from her books Freddie vs. the Family Curse and Thea and the Mischief Makers but reading is not required for presentation. This program will not be recorded.
